Professional plasterers need to have a complete set of tools so they can accomplish their work in the best way possible. Some of these tools are expensive, so if you don’t take good care of replacing or restoring them, it can cost you a lot.

Knowing how to properly maintain your plastering tools will make them last for years and save you tons of money, time and effort instead of buying replacements. Here are a few tips that you can follow to ensure your tools are well maintained.

Tip #1: Clean tools after use

Joint compounds easily harden in a short span of time, that’s why it’s a bad idea to leave that messy gunk stuck on your tools. Clean your tools promptly after every use by scraping off the joint compound and scrub out the residue with a rag and water.

If the compound has already dried onto the tools, you can soak them in a bucket of water with baking soda overnight before scrubbing them again the next day with a dish scouring pad or a stiff scrub brush.

Tip #2: Rustproof your tools

Another way to extend the quality of your tools is by using a rust protectant to prevent corrosion. These type of products normally come in aerosol sprays so you can coat your tools from all sides.

Lubricate the metal all over and wipe the solution off immediately. Be sure to pay close attention to the small screws and bolts as these parts are more prone to rusting. Handles that are made of wood don’t need coating.

Tip #3: Store dry

As plastering tools are all made of metal, you shouldn’t leave them wet for a long time. Leaving them exposed to moisture will cause rusting and affect the quality of your tools.

Once you’re done cleaning your tools, wipe them with a clean rag and store them in a dry place.
